Redington Shores man, 55, struck and killed while loading bike onto PSTA bus

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH — Deputies have released the names of a man killed Monday while loading a bicycle onto the front of a bus and the driver accused of crashing into him.

Michael Joe Richardson, 55, of Redington Shores was fatally injured about 2 p.m. while placing a bike on the front rack of a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus stopped in the southbound lane of Gulf Boulevard just south of 4th Avenue.

A northbound Ford Flex crossed the center line and slammed head-on into the bus, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Richardson was taken by medical helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Ford, 58-year-old David Larry Schwab of New Hartford, Iowa, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that deputies said were not life-threatening.

Schwab was arrested Monday evening and booked into the Pinellas County jail on charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI with property damage. He remained there Tuesday morning with bail set at $25,000.

No other injuries were reported. Deputies closed Gulf Boulevard between 1st and 5th avenues during the investigation.
