Tornado struck Madeira Beach during Sunday storm, officials confirm

Ninety-percent sure quickly became 100 percent Monday morning when the National Weather Service confirmed reports that a tornado hit Madeira Beach when severe weather pushed through the bay area Sunday afternoon.

They were standing at a Publix register when her purse fell. Her Derringer fired and hit him.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office initially reported that the victim accidentally shot, but after Publix provided video of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office learned that the 69-year-old victim, Vernon Messier, was checking out at the cash register with his wife Lillian when her purse fell from the counter to the ground and the gun apparently discharged.

Less than a week after the Florida Legislature passed a bill to ban so-called sanctuary cities, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced Monday that his county is among the first in Florida to take part in a new program designed to help sheriffs comply with requests from federal authorities to hold undocumented immigrants in local jails.
